Behind the Scenes: Working as a Home Economist on James Martin’s Islands to Highlands

When my friend Sam asked if I could cover a couple of James Martin’s Islands to Highlands shows for her, I jumped at the chance.

Sam has been James’ Home Economist for over 20 years. She works across all of his TV programmes, live shows and cookery books, as well as the Islands to Highlands series.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to occasionally step in when Sam is unavailable.  However, this job was probably the most fun I have had.

First, I found myself travelling to the far north of Scotland to film on the beautiful island of Shetland. Then, I had to make my way to the other end of the country and catch a boat from Poole Harbour.

It was a busy schedule, but what an incredible experience. Tough life, but someone has to do it!

The Role of a Home Economist in TV Food Production

A Home Economist is an essential part of any TV cookery programme or food shoot. Behind the scenes, they help make sure everything runs smoothly. This allows chefs and presenters to focus on creating great content.

Throughout my career, I have gained extensive experience working in TV food production. I have also had the privilege of working with some of the biggest names in food and drink, including Mary Berry, James Martin, The Hairy Bikers and John Torode.

To begin with, a Home Economist prepares all the ingredients, kitchen equipment and crockery needed for filming. Everything must be organised and ready at the correct time.

During filming, the Home Economist is always on hand to help. This can include preparing extra ingredients, replacing dishes or solving any last-minute problems.

In addition, they work closely with the production team to make sure each recipe looks its best on camera.

Ultimately, the role combines organisation, creativity and a passion for food. It is a vital part of any successful cookery production.
