James Martin’s Islands to Highlands

James Martin's Islands to Highlands

Freezing and windy but still serving up the curry

When my friend Sam asked if I could cover a couple of James Martin’s Islands to Highlands shows for her I jumped at the opportunity. Sam has been James home economist for over 20 years and as well as working on James Martin’s Islands to Highlands shows she does all of his TV work, live shows and cookery books.

I often get the chance to step in if Sam isn’t available and over the years I have done lots of backstage prep for James but this job was probably the most fun I’ve had. One day I was up in the far north of Scotland on the island of Shetland! Then I had to get myself to the other end of the country and hop on a boat from Pool harbour. Tough life but someone has to do it!

A Home Economist is an integral part of any TV cookery programme or video shoot.

I have lots of TV work experience and have worked with some of the biggest names in the current TV food and drink world including Mary Berry, James Martin, The Hairy Bikers and John Torode. To begin with, a Home economist on set prepares all the ingredients, kitchenware and crockery in the correct place and order, ready for filming. Further to this, while chefs are being filmed, the Home Economist is always on hand to assist if needed.
