Roots York

Roots Restaurant in York is one of my favourite places to eat and is my go-to destination in the city.

We experienced another fabulous and memorable lunch at Roots York when we visited for my birthday earlier in the year. We sampled an array of sharing plates matched with beautiful wines. A warm welcome always awaits with top chefs preparing the food and the most attentive and friendly front of house staff. The restaurant is located in the centre of the city just by the River Ouse, across the river from the train station and next to the Museum Gardens. Tommy Banks is the British Michelin Star head chef and he also owns Michelin-starred The Black Swan at Oldstead. I will tell you all about the black Swan in another post!

Roots opened in September 2018 and their food embraces the best of the seasons. Much of the produce used in both restaurants is grown by themselves on their farm and garden at Oldstead. The menu at Roots is split into three seasons: winter is “Preserving Season”, summer is “The Time of Abundance” and the Spring is the “The Hunger Gap”. The concept is very different than other places I have visited and the food comes to the table in waves, rather than conventional starters, mains, desserts. The ambience is warm and welcoming and the decor is simple but beautiful.

Here are some examples of the delicious food that we sampled during our visit to Roots
